She recounts her life from the time that she married the Earl known only as Bluebeard. Although she gives him her sincere affection, she can't help but notice a lack of returning sentiment on his part. It's implied in the lyrics and made nearly explicit in the concert that she is then unfaithful to him. Enraged, her husband takes a whip to her and lashes her to death, hanging her corpse in a room that is soon to be occupied with the bodies of his future wives. Under Märchen's influence, she returns long after her death, after Bluebeard has re-married and murdered several more women. She leads the new wife to the chamber concealing their hanged corpses, revealing the Earl's dark secret. Her revenge is exacted when the last wife's brothers arrive, killing Bluebeard before he can murder the girl for having broken her promise not to enter the room.
